why unmasking feels harder before it feels easier
we're told unmasking is freedom.
then we try it, and the first few weeks feel worse than before we started.
that's not a sign we're doing it wrong. it's a sign of how masking actually works ...
masking isn't a costume we put on in the morning. it's a set of behaviours we learned so thoroughly that we stopped noticing we were doing them. adjusting our tone. checking our face. rehearsing a sentence before saying it out loud.
put more simply ... masking became automatic. and automatic things are cheap to run.
here's the part that surprises people. unmasking doesn't turn that off. it makes it manual again.
and manual always costs more than automatic.
so why does it cost more at first?
the monitoring doesn't stop, it redirects. we used to check whether we were performing well enough. now we check whether we're performing at all. it's the same watching, pointed somewhere new.
the fear is based on something real. most of us have been corrected before. told we were too much, too flat, too intense, too quiet. when we drop the mask and brace for a reaction, we're not being dramatic. we're remembering.
we don't always know our own baseline. after years of managing our face and our voice, a lot of us genuinely don't know what we look or sound like without the adjusting. that's disorienting before it's freeing.
the tiredness isn't proof that unmasking failed. it's the cost of doing manually what used to run in the background.
what actually helps
start where the stakes are low. alone in the car. one person we already trust. texting instead of calling. the mask doesn't come off everywhere at once, and it shouldn't.
one thing at a time. not the face and the voice and the stimming and the scripts all at once. pick one. let it get boring before adding another.
expect the lag. the energy comes back later, not immediately. that gap is where most of us decide it isn't working and go back.
none of this means unmasking everywhere, with everyone. safety comes first, and there are places and people where masking is the sensible choice. if this is bringing up more than you expected, it's worth talking it through with a professional who knows you.
but knowing why the early part is hard makes it a lot easier not to quit during it.
