why do people think we're angry when we're not?
our face relaxes for a second.
someone asks what's wrong.
nothing is wrong ...
this happens to a lot of us, constantly, and it's genuinely confusing. we weren't feeling anything in particular. we were thinking about lunch. and somebody has read a whole mood off us that wasn't there.
put more simply ... our neutral face is being treated as a signal, when it isn't one.
here's the part that surprises people. the pleasant, engaged face most of us hold in public is work. it's held in place deliberately. so the face people describe as "resting" is often the only unmasked thing about us in the room.
why our faces get misread
a lot of neurotypical conversation runs on continuous facial feedback. small nods, small changes, a face that visibly tracks what's being said. when that feedback goes quiet, it gets read as a message ... usually a negative one.
but our expressions don't always map the way people expect. some of us have less movement at rest. some of us are concentrating so hard on listening that there's nothing spare going into our face.
it isn't an absence of feeling. it's a mismatch between what we're feeling and what's showing.
we spend energy holding a face that looks like listening, and then get asked why we look like we're not.
what it costs
if a neutral face gets questioned enough times, we start managing it. adding expression on top of everything else we're already tracking in a conversation.
that's another layer of monitoring, running the whole time we're with people. it's a real part of why socialising leaves us flattened afterwards.
three replies that end it quickly
when it comes up, a short answer works better than an explanation.
"yeah, i'm good." the low-effort one. it's usually enough.
"this is my happy face." light, ends the question, doesn't invite a follow-up.
"when i go quiet, i'm still listening." for people we'll see again, and who are worth telling.
none of these are performances. they're just a faster way through a question we've all answered a hundred times.
our face doesn't owe anyone a running commentary. and a face at rest is allowed to just be a face at rest.
before you go ... if holding all of that is wearing you out, the social battery reset is a free guide to noticing when your energy is going and topping it back up. it's yours, no strings.
